CAPE COD RAIL TRAIL (CCRT)
September 18, 2010 Cape Cod Rail Trail
Your Adventure AWAITS
ALL DAY EVENT Come bicycle on the Cape's beautiful bike paths and trails, and enjoy the scenery, the sun, the beaches, and the surf along the way. Visit the popular Cape Cod Rail Trail, the Falmouth Shining Sea Trail, the Chatham Bike Route, the Canal Bike paths, the National Seashore, and the Nickerson State Park Bicycle Trails.
Since the rail trail is so long and the scouts are at different levels of riding ability we will be allowing them to ride at their own pace. Each scout must have a buddy when riding the trail or leaving the campsite. More than one buddy would be better. Cellphones would be helpful. Once they leave the camp we can't keep track of them all.
Biking: ,
Your bicycle. Minimum 10 speed mountain or road bikes. No single speed bikes. It should be good shape with only minor adjustments needed. Tools will be available.
Trip forms filled out for all 10, 15 & 25 mile rides. You must complete all these rides to get credit for the 50 mile ride for the merit badge
You must complete all these rides to get credit for the 50 mile ride.
Scouts must complete 50 miles in under 8 hours.
There will be an approximately 5 mile ride from Camp Greenough to the start of the Rail Trail in Dennis. The Cape Cod Rail Trail follows a former railroad right-of-way for 22 miles through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. Its paved surface, few hills, and well-marked automobile crossings make it ideal for cyclists. The trail has a wide unpaved shoulder on one side to accommodate horseback riding, walkers, and runners.
Biking on the Rail Trail is generally quite easy, although be wary of the high volumes of bicycling traffic and of automobiles at the many cross roads.
Most of the bicycling is very level. Try not to be tempted to set distance records. Instead, use the guide and try to really stop to see some of the things along the Trail.
There are many opportunities to get off the trail and visit a beach. Food and water are also readily available and public restrooms can be found at Nickerson State Park, Salt Pond Visitors Center at Cape Cod National Seashore and the National Seashore Headquarters.
If you do not have a bike,
Mountain Bikes (includes one helmet each) rentals are available at $25.00.
